Largest structures destroyed

This might look like an image shot from a fantastic science fiction film but it is not. It is taken by Edward Burtynsky in one of the world’s longest beaches, Chittagong
, Bangladesh’s biggest port. Half of the large ships in the world came here at the end of their last journey to be dismantled. The other half goes to Alang in India
. These largest manmade structures are destoreyed here by over 20.000 people in Bangladesh and India.

The photos of both Edward Burtynsky and Brendan Corr depict the miserable situation of those poor people. Greeenpeace has an active campaign over shipbreaking industry in Bangladesh and India, where human life has no value. When a large ship arrives to the coast, it sinks thanks to the tides on these coasts. This way those coasts became natural dry docks and lots of poeple breaks those large structures into pieces which they can carry. The toxic lead based paints used in ships, asbestos and other toxic materials makes this job one of the dangerous in the world. Thus shipbreaking is forbidden by most of the developed countries, which puts the load on the underdeveloped countries such as Bangladesh, India and some countries which have coasts in Africa.
